Titans Finish First Season in Style!!!
RECAP
Several obstacles faced the Syracuse Track TEAM as the season began with an Indoor meeting clear back in December. The first was recruiting and convincing students that Track and Field could be fun. Luckily, many bought into the idea. The next was facilities and equipment. Many things were not completed during the initial construction of the facility and many items were not ordered. Another obstacle was the lack of experience of most of the athletes. As Outdoor began, we also had weather that bordered on the ridiculous at times. Through it all, about 90 Titans persevered and finished the season in grand style. The Lady Titan Sophomores won the Region Sophomore Championship and the Boys finished 2nd. It’s the first time I can remember that Davis did not win the Girls. The 5A State Championships was also impressive as the Girls finished 18th and the Boys 11th. Not bad for a first-year school with no seniors.

SOPHOMORE REGION
The Lady Titans racked up 151 points to Davis’ 111. Capturing titles for Syracuse were: Jessica Crawley, shot put (33'11); Ashley Hunzeker, discus (95'11); and Abby Rich, 3200m run (13:10). They scored in every event with Jade Clements, Rhylie Gray, Sasha Russell, Hilary Peterson, Ricki Janes, Hannah Williams and Kiana Tebbs placing in the top six in their events.
The Boys had a very good meet also finishing 2nd to Davis. Individual titles were won by Tyrell Yardley, 100m dash (11.28) and 200m dash (22.48) and Aaron Hill, discus (148'04) and shot put (46'04). Yardley, Chris Jackson, Tyler Siddoway and Ryan Palmer ran 3:40.49 to win the 4x400m relay. Also placing in the top six in their events were Tyler Turnblom, Nate Norman, Kuyler Thompson, Tyler Siddoway, Chris Jackson, Steve Wilcox, Jake Rossmango, and Willis Ellsworth.

STATE 5A CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Titans had a great two days at BYU in their first State Championships. The Boys finished 11th in the 26-team field while the Girls were 18th.
Tyrell Yardley had a great meet in finishing 2nd in both the 100m and 200m dashes. His times of 10.92 and 21.94 are among the top times ever run by a sophomore in Utah. Aaron Hill threw 148'07" to place 5th in the discus. That mark would have actually won in a few other years. It also is one of the top marks ever thrown by a sophomore. Tanner Burton cleared 6'00 to place 6th in the high jump to round out the scoring.
For the girls, Jessica Crawley had a big PR throw of 37'02.50" in the shot put to place 5th. Again, this is one of the top marks ever by a sophomore in Utah. McKayla Williams ran 59.28 to place 6th in the 400m dash. This is a great time considering she didn’t really start 400m workouts until the last 10 days of the season. McKayla, Hannah Williams, Sasha Russell and Hilary Peterson ran 4:10.96 in the 4x400m relay to just miss making finals.
It was a great meet and a great learning experience for the Titans. There are many Titans that can’t wait for next year to begin.

Titan Track Update - May 12, 2008

REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Titan Track TEAM did a great job at the Region One Championships last week. Not only in the quality of the performances, but also in the efforts of so many to host the meet. Both Boys and Girls finished 6th in the eight-school region which is by far the strongest in the state.
Scoring for the Girls were: Michele Arave, 8th in the high jump (4'10); Jessica Crawley, 4th in the shot put (33'06.50); Ashley Hunzeker, 6th in the discus (91'05); McKayla Williams, 5th in the 400m dash (1:00.08) and 7th in the 100m hurdles (16.48); Hannah Williams, 5th in the 800m run (2:22.26) and 8th in the 1600m run (5:31.27); Abby Rich, 8th in the 3200m run (12:34.08). In relays, the 4x100 ran 53.09 to finish 6th, just one spot out of going to State. The runners were Felicia Sortor, Sasha Russell, Hilary Peterson and Sydney Watson. The medley finished in the same place to just miss going to state. Sasha Russell, Felicia Sortor, Hilary Peterson and Abby Rich turned in a time of 4:33.33. The 4x400 team of Hilary, Hannah, McKayla and Sasha ran 4:16.37 to place 4th and qualify for State.
The Boys scoring came from: Tanner Burton, 5th in the high jump (5'10); Aaron Hill, 5th in the discus (147'02); Tyrell Yardley, 5th in the 100m dash (11.20) and 2nd in the 200m dash (22.06); Chris Jackson, 6th in the 110m hurdles (16.06) and 7th in the 300m hurdles (42.60). The 4x100m relay finished 6th in 45.13. Running on the team were Yardley, Jackson, Anthony Winegar and Trent Judd. The medley relay also finished 6th in 3:55.24 with Judd, Winegar, Ryan McNeill and Willis Ellsworth carrying the stick. The 4x400m relay was 7th with Jackson, Yardley, McNeill and Sotero Perigo running. Their time of 3:44.49 was less than one second out of 5th place.
The top five in each event qualify for State. We qualified three boys, three girls and one relay team. If we would have competed in any of the other three 5A regions, than number would have been between 12-18 (depending on the region). Region One is tough!!! The top-three boys teams at State and three of the top four girls spots will probably come from Region One.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Sasha Russell and Alex Garrett. Neither have missed a practice all year. Alex continues to work hard and will be a force next year. Sasha ran two great races at Region, just missing the finals in both.

Track Update - May 5

Titan Track Update - April 28, 2008

VIEWMONT / NORTHRIDGE TRI MEET
As has been the case most of the year, weather played a big role in the performances of the meet. We decided to pull many athletes out of their normal events in an attempt to stay healthy. The girls nearly pulled off the victory as Viewmont scored 57 points to the Lady Titan’s 55. Northridge finished with 55. The boys finished in 3rd place scoring 31 points to Viewmont’s 97 and Northridge’s 37.
Finishing first for the girls were Jessica Crawley (shot put), Ashley Hunzeker (discus and javelin), Hilary Peterson (200m dash), McKayla Williams (800m run) and Hannah Williams (1600m run).
Placing first for the boys were Tyrell Yardley (100m dash) and Steve Wilcox (3200m run).

BYU INVITATIONAL
Most of the Titans that were able to get into the prestigious meet had great performances and turned in big PR’s. Jessica Crawley threw 34'11.75 in the shot put to place 8th and become the first Lady Titan to qualify for State. Among 5A schools, she would have been 4th. McKayla Williams had two PR’s, but just missed qualifying for State in the 400m dash (59.82) and 300m hurdles (47.68). She had the 4th fastest time from 5A schools. Michele Arave cleared 4'10 in the high jump, just off qualifying and tying for 7th in 5A schools. Hilary Peterson’s 1:03.13 in the 400m dash was a big PR.
Tyrell Yardley had a great meet running 11.23 in the 100m dash and 22.18 in the 200m dash. He was 4th and 5th among 5A athletes in the two events. Aaron Hill improved on his discus PR, throwing 148'08 to place 9th, 7th from 5A schools.
It was a good experience for the Titans to compete against the best in Utah and surrounding states.
Complete results of the meet can be found at:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Haley Busby, Steve Wilcox and Trent Judd. This is because of their hard, consistent work over the entire course of the season, not from any particular performance this week.

REGION THIS WEEK
We are hosting the Region One Championships Wednesday and Thursday at Syracuse. Action begins both days at 3:30. The two-fold goal is to get as many Titans qualified for State as possible, as well as put on a meet with class. We will need the help of everyone on the TEAM to put on a quality event.

DAVIS HIGH INVITATIONAL
While not many Titans were able to qualify for this very prestigious meet, the ones that did so turning in some great performances. Teams from all over Utah and Wyoming participated in the meet. The format calls for an open portion in the morning and an invited session in the afternoon. Only the very top athletes even make the meet.
Some of the top performances included: Hannah Williams, 1st in the Open 800m run (2:25.65); McKayla Williams, 3rd in the Open 300m hurdles, 4th in the Invited 400m dash (1:00.48); Jessica Crawley, 6th in the shot put (33'02); Aaron Hill, 7th in the Invited discus (144'10, a state qualifying mark); Tyrell Yardley, 7th in the Invited 100m dash (11.21, state qualifying) and 5th in the 200m dash (24.03); Felicia Sortor, Sasha Russell, Hilary Peterson and Hannah Williams ran 4:25.22 to finish 4th in the Invited medley relay; and Hannah, McKayla, Abby Rich and Ricki Janes placed 4th in the 4x800m relay in 10:19.86.
Several athletes had big PR’s including Abby Rich and Kiana Tebbs in the 3200m run. Hannah Williams ran three 800's under 2:30 in a real tough performance. Hilary Peterson ran two great 400's and her fastest 800 of the year. It was a great showing for the Titans against the best in the state.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Hilary Peterson, who had three great races at the Davis Invitational, and Kyle Kelly, who continues to work extremely hard and had two 2nd-place finishes in the Layton dual.

SEASON WINDING DOWN
Man, the time has flown by. With 1 ½ weeks until Region, 2 until Sophomore Region, and 2 ½ until State, it is very important that you take extra care in monitoring the "little" things. These include sleep, nutrition, hydration, injury prevention and re-hab, etc. Maybe you have neglected these things in the past- don’t do so over the next three weeks.

Titan Track Update - April 21

Titan Track Update - April 21, 2008

CLEARFIELD/DAVIS TRI-MEET
The Titans took on Clearfield and Davis in Kaysville Wednesday. The scores indicate why Davis is considered the top team in the State in boys, and right there with Spanish Fork in the girls. The boys scores were Davis 127.5, Syracuse 25.5 and Clearfield 9. If we score it as a dual meet with Clearfield, it would have been the Titans 74, Clearfield 57. The girls score was Davis 110, Syracuse 35 and Clearfield 21. Scoring it as a dual, it would have been Syracuse 92, Clearfield 38. I like the dual scores better.
Several athletes turned in great performances in the cold weather. McKayla Williams won the 300m hurdles in 47.71, a 3-second PR and one of the top times in the state this year. She was also 2nd in the 100m hurdles in 17.21 and was 3nd in the long jump (14'08.50). Reilee Batchelor also had a big PR throwing the javelin 92'07 to place 2nd. Hannah Williams won the 1600m run in 5:40.0. Felicia Sortor placed 3rd in the 100m dash running 13.67. Abby Rich PR’ed in the 3200m run in 12:48.0 to place 3rd. Michele Arave cleared 4'08 to place 3rd in the high jump. Jessica Crawley threw 30'09 to finish 3rd in the shot put. Ashley Hunzeker finished 4th in the shot put (27'10), 4th in the discus (85'07) and 4th in the javelin (88'03). The medley relay finished 2nd with Megan Butler, Michele Arave, Aubrey Eddy and Vanessa Phelps carrying the baton. The 4x4oo also finished 2nd with Hannah Williams, Sasha Russell, Sortor and Phelps running.
Chris Jackson had a great day for the Titans winning both the 110m hurdles (16.64) and 300m hurdles (42.63). Tyler Turnblom’s 5'06 clearance in the high jump was good enough for 2nd. Tanner Burton finished 3rd in the long jump (18'03.50). Aaron Hill threw the discus 141'03 to place 3rd. Tyrell Yardley was 3rd in the 100m dash (11.68) and 2nd in the 200 (23.90). Willis Ellsworth’s 2:24.2 was good enough to place 4th. The 4x400m relay team of Jackson, Yardley, Brian Killingbeck, and Ryan McNeill finished 2nd.
All in all, it was a very good meet for the Titans.

TAYLORSVILLE INVITATIONAL
A short-handed Titan TEAM battled injuries, the Prom, monster winds, and 40 other schools at the Taylorsville Invitational. With such problems, the places were few.
Hannah Williams finished 8th in both the 1600m run (5:42.0) and 800m run (2:35.73). Tyrell Yardley’s 24.33 into a hurricane-force wind was good enough for 4th. Michele Arave cleared a seasonal best 4'10 to place 6th in the high jump. Aaron Hill’s 131'07 was good enough for 3rd in the discus.
This was the type of meet measured by efforts- not by the marks established. And the efforts were great.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Michele Arave, who continues improve in the high jump, and Kuyler Thompson, who PR’ed in all three throwing events last week.

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Titans had some great performances under bad weather conditions at the Davis District Championships. The Lady Titans finished 4th in the eight-team field while the Boys finished 6th. Placing high for the girls were: McKayla Williams, 1st in the 400m dash (1:02.31) and 7th in the 100m hurdles (16.64); Hannah Williams, 2nd in the 800m run (2:32.98); Abby Rich, 5th in the 3200m run (13:03.6) and 6th in the 800m run (2:42.7); Kiana Tebbs, 6th in the 3200m run (13:23.0); Vanessa Phelps, 8th in the 800m run (2:43.7); Michele Arave, 8th in the high jump (4'08); Ashley Hunzeker, 3rd in the discus (78'02) and 8th in the javelin (85'03); Reilee Batchelor, 5th in the javelin (87'08); and Jessica Crawley, 2nd in the shot put (32'05).
Top finishers for the boys included: Tyrell Yardley, 4th in the 100m dash (11.47); Chris Jackson, 6th in the 300m hurdles (44.08); Tanner Burton, 3rd in the high jump (6'00) and 7th in the long jump (18'01); Aaron Van Voris, 5th in the long jump (18'05); and Aaron Hill, 5th in the discus (130'02) and 8th in the shot put (41'00).
The most impressive performance of the meet was the positive attitude shown by so many that competed under the tough weather conditions. They focused on the things they could control and did not worry about those things they could not control.

UHSTCA INVITATIONAL- HUGE SUCCESS
The Utah High School Track Coaches Association Invitational held at Syracuse was a huge success. This is one of the few big invitationals held each year in Utah. Not only did the Titans have some great performances on the track, but with the help of non-competing athletes and the support of so many parents, the meet helped show that Titan Track and Field is going to be a great PROGRAM, not just a great TEAM.
With over 30 schools competing, the Syracuse Girls finished 10th and the Boys 13th. Scoring for the Lady Titans were: McKayla Williams, 2nd 400m dash (1:00.94); Abby Rich, 5th 3200m run (12:44.7); Jessica Crawley, 5th shot put (33'08); Aubrey Eddy, Ricki Janes, Michele Arave, and Sasha Russell, 8th 4x400m relay (4:38.1); Hannah Williams, Vanessa Phelps, Hilary Peterson and McKayla Williams, 2nd 4x800m relay (10:19.0).
Scoring for the Boys were: Tyrell Yardley, 4th 100m dash (11.50); Chris Jackson, 6th 300m hurdles (42.60); Tanner Burton, 8th high jump (6'01); and Aaron Hill, 2nd discus (142'02). With that throw, Aaron became the first Titan in history to automatically qualify for State. Also, Tyler Siddoway, Yardley, Jackson and Trent Judd placed 5th in the 4x100m relay (45.14).

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Jessica Crawley, who continues to score big points and improve as a thrower, and Tanner Burton, who can become a force in several events. His 400 relay split at Davis District was one of the highlights of the week.
