Titan Track Update - May 26, 2008
TITAN DECATHLON
Seven athletes battled the weather and 10 events to complete the First Titan Decathlon. The Decathlon consists of 10 events over two days and is considered the most grueling test of pure athletic ability in sports. While the event has been around for more than a century for men, it is relatively new for women, and is still not on the Olympic slate. It probably will be in four or eight years. The IAAF scoring tables make it possible to compare the efforts of men and women. Each of the 10 events is scored with 1000 points being a certain percentage of the world’s best performances in that event. The 10 events are: 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m dash, 100/110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m run.
The winner of the Titan Decathlon was McKayla Williams, who finished with 4341 points. This is the highest point total ever by a Utah high school female. McKayla had several good performances, with her best being her 4'11" clearance in the high jump to establish a school record. Ryan McNeill was 2nd with 3711 points. The other finishers were: Alex Garrett (3418), Kuyler Thompson (3287), Ashley Hunzeker (2943), Hannah Williams (2655) and Clayton Bergloff (1836).
It was a fun two days. Many of the athletes had never competed in some of the events. Next year, expect the point totals to soar even higher.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athlete of the Week was Ryan McNeill. He had a great decathlon and has had an outstanding spring. We expect some big things from him next year.
BARBEQUE/AWARDS
As has been the case all year, the weather played havoc with something dealing with Track. Thanks to several parents, we were able to get everyone filled up.
The year-end awards went to: McKayla Williams (Outstanding Female Track Athlete); Ashley Hunzeker (Outstanding Female Field Athlete); Tyrell Yardley (Outstanding Male Track Athlete); Aaron Hill (Outstanding Male Field Athlete); and Jessica Crawley (Performance of the Year).
CROSS COUNTRY MEETING
A meeting for everyone interested in running Cross Country and their parents will be held this Wednesday, May 28th at 6:00 pm in the Little Theater. Plan on attending and also helping to spread the word to anyone even remotely interested.
